Laundromat Washer & Dryer Error Codes: Speed Queen, Huebsch, Dexter

Commercial laundromat machines show plain-text error codes that point to a specific circuit: door lock, fill, drain, motor drive, heater or payment system. Speed Queen and Huebsch are both Alliance Laundry Systems brands and share the same controls, so their codes match. Dexter uses its own messages. The tables below come from the manufacturers' troubleshooting and operator's manuals, and each one names the machine family it covers.

Before you look anything up, check the model number on the machine's nameplate. Commercial washers have used several control generations over the years: coin-slide, MDC (microprocessor) and networked or card systems. Codes differ between them.

Speed Queen & Huebsch commercial front-load washers (MDC and NetMaster controls)

These codes come from Alliance Laundry Systems' Commercial Frontload Washers troubleshooting manual (part 802740). It covers model numbers beginning with SFN (Speed Queen) and HFN (Huebsch).

CodeWhat it meansWhat you can safely checkWhen to call
doorDoor not closed at the start of a cycleClose the door firmly; check for clothing caught in itIf it shows with the door closed: door switch or wiring
E:dLDoor lock error: door didn't lock within 15 seconds, or didn't unlock within 3 minutes at end of cycle. Non-fatal; clears if the door locks or unlocksMake sure the door is fully shutIf it repeats: lock assembly or wiring
E:doDoor open error: control saw "door open" and "door locked" at the same time. Can be caused by pulling on the door while it's locking. FatalTell customers not to pull on a locked door; power the machine down to resetIf it returns with no one touching the door
E:FLFill error: fill level not reached within 30 minutes. FatalMake sure the hot and cold supply valves are fully openIf water is on: inlet valves, screens or pressure switch
E:dfDrive failure: motor unplugged or failed, tachometer circuit open, or inner basket locked up. Fatal; machine must be unpowered to resetPower-cycle onceMotor, drive or basket diagnosis
E:SPSerial communication error: main control can't talk to the motor control after three resets. FatalNothing user-serviceableBlown fuse on the motor control board or wiring
E:HtHeater error: more than two hours to reach water temperature (machines with heaters). The cycle continuesNothing user-serviceableHeater elements and wiring
OPThermistor circuit open while heating (machines with heaters)Nothing user-serviceableThermistor or wiring
SHThermistor circuit shorted while heating (machines with heaters)Nothing user-serviceableThermistor or wiring

Coin-slide models don't have a code display. The same manual explains that they flash pairs of LEDs, one second on and one second off. DOOR LOCKED + FINAL SPIN AND TUMBLE means a motor failure. IN USE + DOOR LOCKED means a fill error. IN USE + CLOSE DOOR means the door was opened during a cycle. All three are fatal and need the machine powered down to clear.

Speed Queen & Huebsch 30 lb stack tumble dryers

Alliance's service manual for 30 lb stack dryers (part 70291301) lists these display codes. It covers earlier production through a specific serial number, so check the serial range on your nameplate.

CodeWhat it meansWhat you can safely checkWhen to call
OPThermistor circuit openNothing user-serviceableThermistor, wiring or control
SHThermistor circuit shortedNothing user-serviceableThermistor, wiring or control
EC:19No communication between the control and the card reader (card models)Check that the card reader is powered and litReader, harness or control
doorDoor error on models with 24-volt electronic controlsClose the door fully; check the lint panel is closedDoor switch or wiring

Dexter C-Series vended washers (T-300 through T-1800)

Dexter's operator's manual for its vended C-Series control (8514-296-001) shows full-word messages. For most drive and communication faults, Dexter says to check the VFD (variable frequency drive) fault light before turning the power off, because the drive's own fault indicator helps pinpoint the cause.

MessageWhat it meansWhat you can safely checkWhen to call
DOOR LOCK ERRORDoor-locked signal not received after three start attemptsMake sure the door is fully closedLock mechanism, switches or wiring

What's safe to try

  • Make sure the door is fully closed and nothing is caught in the gasket. Customers pulling on a locking door is a documented cause of Speed Queen and Huebsch E:do.
  • Check that the water supply valves are fully open before you assume a fill fault (E:FL, SLOW FILL ERROR).
  • Power-cycle once when the manual says a fault clears only by removing power, such as the Speed Queen/Huebsch fatal errors. On Dexter machines, read the VFD fault light first.
  • Keep dryer lint screens and lint compartments clean as part of daily routine.
  • Never open a door on a drum that's still turning, and never defeat a door lock to get a customer's clothes out.

Don't open control panels, drive enclosures or gas dryer burner compartments. These machines run on high-voltage power, and motor drives can hold a charge after the power is off.

When to call a technician

  • Any fatal error that comes back after one power-cycle (E:df, E:SP, E:do, Dexter COMM and DRIVE errors).
  • SPIN STOP ERROR, or any sign that a drum won't stop. Take the machine out of service.
  • Repeated fill or drain errors on a machine whose supply valves are open.
  • Heater and thermistor codes (E:Ht, OP, SH). On dryers, a thermistor fault means the control can't read the temperature correctly.
  • Card reader communication errors that take a machine off the network.

Write down the machine number, model, code and what the customer was doing when it happened. With several machines down, a list helps us bring the right parts.

Our independent technicians repair Speed Queen, Huebsch and Dexter equipment in laundromats across Manhattan and the other four boroughs. We offer 24/7 emergency service and give you upfront pricing before any work starts.
